SEXVOTES

These two works responded to a call from TransAparente Art Collective. Their "Sex-votes" project aimed to activate "reflection, expression and transformation of social mandates that distort, cover up, blame, discriminate and restrict sexuality." An exvote or votive offering is one that the faithful dedicate to God, the Virgin or the saints as a sign and memory of a benefit received. "A sex-vote is an artistic object/experiment in which each artist thanks for a sexual/affective experience."

The first piece, "eXXXvoto", thanks for desire and the search for pleasure. I put together photography and erotic and pornographic drawings from the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, in a photomontage printed on gum bichromate paper. The installation shows a warning about its explicit sexual content and overlays the rotating acetate negative  used for printing so that the image is only visible to those who wish to see it. The second piece, "If it wasn't for SEX, nature would have less colors", was made while teaching a photographic experimentation workshop for the "Sex-votes" project.

The project was developed at the Contemporary Art Center and at La Naranjilla Mecánica, in Quito, between June and August 2011, and featured a blog and a catalog.
